Choosing the type of respirator based on the gas, debris or hazard type in the workplace is essential to protecting your employees. ANSI Z88.6-2006 is generally the standard referenced by EHS professionals when choosing the type of protection needed.
Disposable*: these masks can come in variety of types with varying levels of protection. These are generally used to shield wearers from flying dirt, debris, liquids and other hazardous materials that have the potential to cause harm by being ingested.
Half-mask*: are generally worn in combination with other PPE. These work to remove certain contaminants from the air depending on the type of cartridge and mask.
Full-face*: these respirators generally protect the entire face from airborne particulates. These work to remove certain contaminants from the air depending on the type of cartridge and mask while also protecting the wearers eyes.
Self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)*: is generally comprised of a tight fitting full face mask with a self contained supply of oxygen often carried by the wearer. These are built for use when there is a significant oxygen deficiency or gas/vapor containment that supposes a "danger to life or health".

Fit-testing helps determine the fit/seal of the respirator on a particular wearer. This testing helps determine whether a mask will provide full seal around the wearer's nose, mouth and face. This testing is meant to test the fit of the mask and not efficacy of the cartridges against a certain gas or particulate.
